At last the Genie is in the bottle! The Hahndorf Hill GRU Gruner Veltliner 2013 has been bottled this week and is now resting in our cool underground cellars for the next six weeks until release.
2013 was an amazing vintage with good, dry days which allowed us to harvest the grapes without the pressures that applied in vintages 2011 and 2012. The grapes were all hand-harvested and therefore arrived in perfect condition at the winery. This allowed for much reduced amounts of added sulphur during the winemaking processes.

It was extremely exciting to make up the final GRU blend and I’m expecting a wine of great vibrancy and texture with a range of citrus components from lime through to grapefruit, plus sensual stone-fruit, white-pepper spice, ginger and even a touch of tarragon. Of course, post-bottling, it is still very shy and closed and hence the 6 week rest in the cellar before release. But it will be very gratifying to watch how it develops over the next year or two from its fresh, youthful citrus and spice personality to a more complex and textural animal in the future.

Further new developments at HHW are that vintage 2013 has allowed us to introduce two further Gruner labels into the fold which means that we now have an exciting trilogy of labels under the Gruner banner!

This year will see the first release of our ‘White Mischief’ label under the Gruner banner as a slightly riper, more accessible style which will also be less dry than the original GRU style.

And the third 2013 label, which will be known as ‘GRU 2’ and which will be released only next year, is a particularly thrilling development. This wine will be in a fuller, more opulent style that has had more barrel and lees work applied to it. It is akin to the ‘Smaragd’ style that is made in the Wachau region of Lower Austria and is designed to be a wine that has definite long term age-ability.
So watch this space for all upcoming release dates!
